Program highlights from SHiNE’s first 8 years:

Over the past 8 years SHINE has facilitated 4 core programs: SHiNE Network, Challenge Grants, Education Lessons and Activities, Public Events, and our website, shine.com. SHiNE bridges offline to online in an effort to grow young peoples utilization of technology as an outlet for expression and as a tool to advance meaningful social change. 

 

§         MTV/CBS Viacom SHiNE awarded five students who were determined to be future civil rights leaders with $50,000 each towards their college or graduate education.  A total of $250,000 was awarded to ensure that these young people could further their education and become the civil rights leaders of tomorrow.

§         We have facilitated over 1,000 events for teens including speakouts, town hall meetings, pledge walls and concerts.  

§         The SHiNE Network after-school program was operable in 35 communities throughout the country, including New York, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Maine, Vermont, Indiana, Florida, and New Jersey.

§         SHiNE was the youth fulfillment arm of the White House’s National Campaign Against Youth Violence (NCAYV).

§         We have provided over 100 students with funding and instruction to accomplish their community based projects through our Challenge Grant program.

§         Worked with over 100 schools in NYC after September 11th to supply innovative non- violence lessons and conduct in- school interactive workshops, where we helped students develop and communicate positive solutions to violence. Five student designs were painted as public murals throughout the city.

§         Painted over 35 student-designed murals across the country that promote acceptance for diversity and nonviolence to teens.

§         Facilitated the first annual Stanford/Harvard Faces of Diversity conference.  

§         As a result of our operation of the MTV/SHiNE Fight For Your Rights Against Discrimination site we have inspired:

-        32,000 students to send emails to President Bush and Vice President Cheney requesting Hate Crimes legislation

-        800 young people to sign-up to volunteer

-        4,000 students to participate in online discussion groups about discrimination

§         After the tragedies of September 11, 2000 SHiNE worked together with Sakura and PowerUp to bring 250 community based centers from around the country together to paint Sidewalk Harmony Murals.

§         SHiNE was selected to conduct an in- school nonviolence program for 800 students led by Congresswomen Corrine Brown and five members of the Congressional Black Caucus in Jacksonville, Florida.

§         Together with the New York Times brought teens together from around the country to discuss gay stereotypes, "alternative" proms, homophobia in school and the responsibility of teachers and school officials to provide safe environments for gay students.

§         Organized 350 teens to come together on Capital Hill in Washington, DC for a Town Hall Summit to discuss solutions to youth violence.

§         Recent student projects include: You’re My Hero and the establishment of the Serrano Intermediate School Peer Group in Lake Forest, California. This program will gather information about culturally diverse people from different backgrounds and educate the students of Serrano Intermediate about them and how they contributed to society as it evolved.  More importantly, they will be communicating how these individuals have impacted and enriched the daily life of teens today on the school campus.
